This 6 week workshop, taught by renowned mandolinist and folk musician Brian Oberlin, will focus on chords, rhythms, melody, and musicianship skills for playing in a group. The song styles are comprised of American folk music, including bluegrass, and some European folk tunes. Students will be strumming, picking and learning recognizable music that has 3 to 5 different chords, and is played by amateur and hobbyist musicians all around the world. The secondary focus will be the ways and means of playing short melodic lines in-between chord changes and vocal passages. This is a beginning step to improvisation and can be called “playing fills” or “voice leading.”

The class is open to beginner and intermediate players of mandolin, guitar (acoustic), fiddle, banjo (4 and 5 string), bass (upright, acoustic or electric), dobro, cello, viola, mandola, octave mandolin, dulcimer, autoharp, harmonica, accordion and vocalists. The weekly class is taught by Triumph Music Academy's Brian Oberlin who has an extensive performing and teaching career in folk music
